Common Punjabi Speech Recognition Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Speech recognition does not understand what you mean; it picks the most likely words for the sounds it heard. Knowing where it usually goes wrong lets you check those places first instead of rereading everything with equal suspicion.

A starting point

Names of people and places

A name that is also an everyday word is usually fine; an uncommon surname or a small village may be replaced by something that sounds similar. Correct the first one by hand, then use Find & replace so every later mention matches.

Numbers, dates and money

ਪੰਦਰਾਂ and ਪੰਜਾਹ, ਸੱਠ and ਸੱਤ, ਡੇਢ and ਢਾਈ: in a noisy room these blur. Say numbers a little more slowly, and compare every figure in the text with what you intended. For anything involving money or appointments, check twice.

Words that sound alike

ਕਿ and ਕੀ, ਹੈ and ਹੈਂ, ਦਾ and ਦਾਂ are chosen from context, and the wrong one sometimes wins. These are small words, so the eye skips them. Reading the text aloud to yourself — or using Read aloud — makes them stand out.

Missing or extra marks

Addak (ੱ), bindi (ਂ), tippi (ੰ) and the dot under letters such as ਸ਼ ਖ਼ ਗ਼ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ are sometimes dropped. If a word looks slightly bare, it probably is. Fix it with the keyboard; saying it again rarely changes the result.

English words inside Punjabi

“Meeting”, “school”, “doctor” may appear in Gurmukhi (ਮੀਟਿੰਗ) or in English letters. Neither is wrong, but a document should be consistent. Pick one style and tidy the rest.

Sentence ends in the wrong place

A danda is added when you pause after a finished phrase. If you pause mid-sentence to think, one may land early. Delete it and carry on — and next time, finish the thought before pausing.

A two-minute checking routine

First pass: names. Second pass: numbers and dates. Third pass: read the whole text at speaking speed. Three short passes with one target each catch more than one long anxious read.

Your words, ready for the next step.

Start small. Review the meaning. Keep a copy.
