Keep the Stories Only Your Family Can Tell

A first job, a village celebration or a journey can hold a whole family history. Begin with one event and one person, rather than trying to write an entire life in one sitting.

A starting point

Ask about a moment, not a lifetime

Try “What do you remember about your first school day?” Agree with the storyteller about what you will write down and who may read it. Give them room to leave private parts out.

Capture short live drafts

Use the live editor for a few sentences at a time. Stop to read together before continuing. If recognition misses a phrase, ask for it again or type it yourself. The live editor is not an archive of old recordings.

Keep the expressions that matter

A family saying may carry more meaning than a polished replacement. Preserve the original expression and, if useful, add a separate explanation. Distinguish the storyteller’s words from your own notes.

Check the setting together

Review people’s names, village names and dates. Use “around that time” when nobody remembers an exact year. Do not turn an uncertain recollection into an invented fact.

Save a family copy

Give the story a title and note who told it and when it was written. Download an editable copy for later corrections and a PDF for reading. Browser drafts can be cleared, so keep important memories in your own backup.

Your words, ready for the next step.

Start small. Review the meaning. Keep a copy.
