Punjabi Voice Typing on Mobile Phones

A phone is always with you and its microphone is designed for speech at arm’s length. With one shortcut on the home screen, writing a Punjabi message becomes as quick as recording a voice note — except the other person can read it in a meeting.

A starting point

ਮੈਂ ਰਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਂ। ਵੀਹ ਮਿੰਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ।

Set it up once

On Android, open the site in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu and choose Add to Home screen. From then on it opens like an app. The first time you tap Start speaking, Chrome asks for the microphone; choose Allow and it will not ask again.

Hold the phone like a voice note

Keep the bottom of the phone about a hand’s width from your mouth. Do not cover the microphone hole with a finger or a case flap. Outdoors, turn your back to the wind; indoors, move away from the television or a running fan.

Speak in phrases, not word by word

Recognition chooses spellings from context. “ਮੈਂ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਆਵਾਂਗਾ” said as one phrase is far more reliable than four separate words with gaps. Speak as you would to a person standing next to you.

When listening stops by itself

Phone browsers stop recognition after a few seconds of silence. Nothing is lost: tap Start speaking again and continue from where the cursor is. If the button does nothing, check that a call, a recorder or another tab is not holding the microphone.

On an iPhone

iPhone browsers do not offer the speech recognition this site relies on, so voice typing may not start there. Typing, editing, punctuation keys and downloads all work. This article will be updated when iPhone voice typing has been tested.

Send or save

Tap Copy and paste into the chat. If you registered a free account, the draft is also saved to it, so a message begun on the bus can be finished on a laptop at home.

Your words, ready for the next step.

Start small. Review the meaning. Keep a copy.
