Everyday life · A practical writing project

Punjabi, Hindi, English—Keep Your Own Voice

Real conversations often move between languages. Your writing can keep that rhythm while still making sense to its reader. The important choices are consistency, script and context.

A starting point

ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਸਾਡੀ meeting ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਦੋ ਵਜੇ ਹੈ। ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ report ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਆਓ।

Choose the language carrying the sentence

Select the language used for most of the sentence and try a short draft. Mixed-language recognition varies by service and device. Do not assume that every English word will appear in Latin letters.

Treat names as fixed details

Check brand names, people’s names, email addresses and URLs yourself. Choose one spelling and use it throughout the draft. Typing a name once can be easier than correcting several different guesses later.

Choose the script for the reader

Gurmukhi and Devanagari are different scripts. Switching the editor language does not translate an existing draft. If readers need two languages, prepare and review each version separately.

Explain unfamiliar terms

Keep a familiar family expression when it helps the message feel natural. For a work document, add a brief explanation if a term may be unfamiliar. Let the reader’s needs guide the choice.

Read it in its destination

After copying, check that all scripts display correctly and that lines wrap sensibly on a phone. Use a Unicode font that supports the languages in the draft. The finished message should be readable where it will actually be used.

Your words, ready for the next step.

Start small. Review the meaning. Keep a copy.
