Type Punjabi in English Letters, Get Gurmukhi
No microphone and no Punjabi keyboard? Type Punjabi the way you write it in chat — “sat sri akaal, tusi kiven ho” — and copy the Gurmukhi. This writes the same Punjabi words in Gurmukhi letters. It does not translate English into Punjabi.
Transliteration, not translation · converted in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere. You can also edit the Gurmukhi before copying.
Transliteration, not translation
“ghar” becomes ਘਰ because those are the same sounds in another script. Typing the English word “house” only spells out ਹੌਸੇ, because the tool does not know English meanings. For translation, use a translation service; for Punjabi you can say or spell, use this or the voice typing on the home page.
The spelling rules
aa ਾ · i ਿ · ee ੀ · u ੁ · oo ੂ · e ੇ · ai ੈ · o ੋ · au ੌ. Capital T D N R L give ਟ ਡ ਣ ੜ ਲ਼ (small t d n r l give ਤ ਦ ਨ ਰ ਲ). A doubled letter adds addak: gall → ਗੱਲ, hatth → ਹੱਥ. n before another consonant becomes tippi or bindi: andar → ਅੰਦਰ. Type ~ for a nasal sound anywhere: haa~ → ਹਾਂ. Words in {braces} stay in English letters.
Common words are recognised
Everyday words that people spell loosely — main, tusi, nahi, vich, nu, kiven, Punjab — are written the usual Gurmukhi way. Other words follow the rules above, so the same spelling always gives the same result.
Always read before you copy
Roman Punjabi is spelled in many ways, so the result is shown next to what you type and you can fix the Roman spelling until the Gurmukhi is right. Small corrections are often quicker in the writing box with the Gurmukhi keys.
