How to Type Punjabi Without a Keyboard

Most people who say “I cannot type Punjabi” can speak it perfectly well. The gap is the keyboard, not the language. Voice typing closes that gap: you say the sentence, the page writes it in Gurmukhi, and the keyboard is only needed for small repairs.

A starting point

What you need

A phone or computer with a microphone, an internet connection, and a browser that supports speech recognition — Chrome on Android or on a computer is the dependable choice. You do not need to install a Punjabi keyboard, a font or an app.

Say one sentence and look at it

Open the writing box, choose ਪੰਜਾਬੀ and press Start speaking. Say one complete sentence at your normal speed and stop. Reading a single sentence back is quick, and it teaches you how the recogniser hears your voice before you trust it with a whole page.

Repair with the tools on the page

Tap a wrong word and retype just that word; your phone’s ordinary keyboard can do this if it has a Punjabi layout, and if it has not, say the word again on its own. The punctuation row under the box adds । , ? ! where the cursor is. If a name is wrong in several places, Find & replace corrects them together.

Build up to paragraphs

Once single sentences come out well, speak three or four at a time, pausing briefly between them so the danda falls in the right place. Stop and read after each paragraph. This rhythm — speak, stop, read — is faster than speaking for five minutes and then hunting for errors.

Use the text anywhere

Press Copy and paste into WhatsApp, email, Facebook, Word or Google Docs. The text is standard Unicode, so it stays readable on any device. For a document, download it as PDF or Word instead.

Your words, ready for the next step.

Start small. Review the meaning. Keep a copy.
