Punjabi typing online — speak it or type it

No Punjabi keyboard to learn and nothing to install. Say the sentence, check it, and paste real Gurmukhi Unicode wherever you need it.

  1. Choose ਪੰਜਾਬੀ in the writing box.
  2. Speak a sentence, or type it with any keyboard.
  3. Correct names and numbers, then copy or download.

Why speaking is often faster than a Punjabi keyboard

Gurmukhi keyboards ask you to remember where each letter, matra and half-letter sits. For a short message that is fine; for a letter or an assignment it is slow. Speaking a sentence and then correcting two words is usually quicker than typing every character — and you can still type whenever you prefer, in the same box.

How to do it

Go to the writing box on the home page and choose ਪੰਜਾਬੀ. Press Start speaking, allow the microphone the first time, and talk at your normal pace in a reasonably quiet place. Pause briefly at the end of a sentence and a danda is added for you. Press Stop, then read through what was written.

Fixing what was heard wrongly

Names of people and villages, and English words in the middle of Punjabi, are the usual trouble spots. Tap the word and retype it. If the same name is wrong in ten places, use Find & replace once. The punctuation row adds । , ? ! at the cursor so you do not need to hunt for them on your own keyboard.

A worked example

Say: “ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਜੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਐਤਵਾਰ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਦਸ ਵਜੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਮਿਲਾਂਗੇ” and stop. Check the day and the time, add a comma after ਜੀ if you like, press Copy and paste it into WhatsApp. That is the whole job.

It is real Unicode

The text is standard Unicode Gurmukhi, not a picture and not an old font encoding. It shows correctly in WhatsApp, Facebook, email, Word and Google Docs, and can be searched and edited later.

Questions people ask

Can I type Punjabi online without a Punjabi keyboard?

Yes. Speak and the words are written in Gurmukhi. You only need a keyboard to make corrections.

Does it work for long documents?

Yes. Speak a paragraph at a time and check each one. Your draft is kept in the browser, and with a free account it is saved to your account as well.

Can I download what I type?

Yes — as plain text, a Word-compatible file or a PDF.

Is this the same as Roman-to-Punjabi typing?

No. This tool writes what you say, or what you type with a Gurmukhi keyboard. It does not convert Roman letters such as “kiven ho” into Gurmukhi.
